Understanding Solo Vocal Communication

In order to successfully communicate with others, you must first learn to communicate with yourself. This concept is known as solo vocal communication.

Intrapersonal Communication: The Foundation

Intrapersonal communication is the most basic level of communication. It is concerned with communicating with your own self and is the foundation of interpersonal communication. Intrapersonal communication is to do with self.

It involves thinking, concentration, and analysis. Psychologists include both daydreaming and nocturnal dreaming in this category.

Examples of intrapersonal communication include:

  • Speaking aloud to oneself.
  • Writing not intended for others (or the tools) to write.

Self-Concept and Self-Awareness

Self-concept or self-awareness is not inborn, but is the basis for intrapersonal communication, because it determines how a person sees themselves and is oriented toward others. It means your level of knowledge about yourself and how you feel about yourself.

Though we think that we know everything about ourselves, there is more to the self-concept. This is because we maintain separate private and public selves.

Process of making internal revelations about oneself that others would be unlikely to know otherwise.

Improving Self-Communication

The Johari Window

These sections vary according to our relationship with others and have been illustrated by the social scientist Joseph Luft and Harrington. These have been illustrated by the social scientist Joseph Luft and Harrington.

The Johari Window is a psychological tool created by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955 used for self-awareness, personal development, improving communications, interpersonal relationships and understanding group dynamics.

Johari Window

The Johari Window model consists of a 2×2 grid, dividing personal awareness into four different perspectives:

  • Open Self/Area: What is known by the person about him/herself and is also known by others.
  • Blind Self/Area: What is unknown by the person about him/herself but which others know.
  • Hidden Self/Area: What the person knows about him/herself that others do not know.
  • Unknown Self/Area: What is unknown by the person about him/herself and is also unknown by others.

In a close relationship, the open portion will be considerable, but when we communicate with a casual acquaintance, then the hidden area will be the largest area in the Johari window.

Understanding these different areas can help you improve your communication skills and build stronger relationships.
