Art and Perception: Exploring the Intersection of Art and Science

The Art and Perception journal serves as a high-quality platform for publishing new artwork and research in the multi-disciplinary emerging bridge between art and perception.

As such, it aims to become the top venue to explore the links between the science of perception and the arts, and to bring together artists, researchers, scholars and students in a unified community that can cooperate, discuss and develop new scientific perspectives in this complex and intriguing new field.

The ambition of the journal is to combine the differing methods and insights of artists and scientists in order to expand our knowledge of art and perceptual experience in a way that neither could do alone. The purpose is not to minimize or erase the differences between the arts and sciences, which are grounded in venerable histories that are in many ways necessarily distinct.

Art & Perception will serve those across several areas of science studying the way works of art and design affect us perceptually, cognitively, or physiologically. The editors are also keen to receive submissions from practicing artists, and those in related fields of history and theory, which offer an artistic perspective on perception.

The Art And Perception is a research journal that publishes research related to Arts and Humanities; Psychology. This journal is published by the Brill Academic Publishers. The ISSN of this journal is 22134905, 22134913.

The SJR (ScImago Journal Rank) measures citations weighted by prestige. It is useful for comparing journals within the same field, and forms the basis of the subject category ranking. A journal SJR indicator is a numeric value representing the average number of weighted citations received during a selected year per document published in that journal during the previous three years, as indexed by Scopus. Higher SJR indicator values are meant to indicate greater journal prestige. SJR is developed by the Scimago Lab, originated from a research group at University of Granada. Q1 journals are cited more often and by more prestigious journals than those in the other quartiles.

Each subject category of journals is divided into four quartiles: Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4. Q1 is occupied by the top 25% of journals in the list; Q2 is occupied by journals in the 25 to 50% group; Q3 is occupied by journals in the 50 to 75% group and Q4 is occupied by journals in the 75 to 100% group.

CiteScore of an academic journal is a measure reflecting the yearly average number of citations to recent articles published in that journal. This journal evaluation metric was launched in December 2016 by Elsevier as an alternative to the generally used JCR impact factors (calculated by Clarivate). CiteScore is based on the citations recorded in the Scopus database rather than in JCR, and those citations are collected for articles published in the preceding four years instead of two or five.

Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) is calculated annually from Scopus data. It is a sophisticated metric that intrinsically accounts for field-specific differences in citation practices.

Vision and Depiction Conference

Vision and Depiction celebrates form as interface between art and science. It is a conference about how to depict form, and how form is perceived. But it is also a conference about the many connections that form has with the content and context of pictures.

Moreover, it is a conference about the interaction between the physical medium, and the mental presentations it gives rise to. We invite artists, designers, scholars and scientists that are interested in the formal aspects of vision and depiction.

This scope finds its’ origin in a reappraisal of the formal analysis, particularly those formal elements that share commonalities between science and art. Examples are texture, color, light, shape, space, material, motion, etc.

In addition, we are interested in whether these formal elements apply to the representation (motif) or on the artworks’ surface (medium) and possibly the interaction between these two. Lastly, we are interested in the relations between formal elements and what they refer to, i.e. their iconographic or semiotic meaning. If you doubt whether your work fits the scope, please contact us.

To delineate the scope the conference, we have invited keynote speakers spanning the breadth of topics and disciplines that define Vision and Depiction. We are very excited that we have two artist talks confirmed (we may add two more, unconfirmed). Moreover, we have five scientific talks confirmed, of which two ‘senior’ and three ‘junior’ talks.

During the online submission, you will be asked to select your presentation preference: poster or oral. Most people prefer to give an oral presentation for both practical reasons (you do not have to print a poster, and you automatically reach a large audience) and prestige reasons (in some fields, an oral presentation is regarded more highly than a poster presentation).

This is somewhat unfortunate because poster presentations can be very engaging as you have direct discussion with your peers, instead of the 3 minute time slot normally allotted at oral presentations. And to accommodate the practical burden, just like last edition, we will provide a poster printing service!

Posters should be prepaired in A0 (118.8 cm by 84 cm). The default orientation is portrait (i.e.

TU Delft

You can bring your own laptop or a USB. Please check whether everything works during the break before your session. We have arranged the possibility to publish your work as a full paper in a special issue about the conference in the journal Art and Perception.

Since we hardly have funding we need to ask for a registration fee. This will cover the cost for catering (coffee breaks, lunch & one dinner) and some rental equipment. Reduced fee applies to (PhD) students and postdocs. Waivers are available for (a limited amount of) artists.

The conference will take place in the building of Industrial Design Engineering, adress is Landbergstraat 15. It is located on the TU Delft campus which is surprisingly close to the city center and train station. So close that you can actually walk everything. But if you want to take a bus, you can take them either at the train station or at the next stop Zuidpoort. There are direct trains between Delft and Schiphol.

After two conferences called The Skin of Things 2018 and 2021 that focussed on the depiction and perception of material properties, we decided to broaden the scope and organise he first Vision and Depiction in 2024.
