Adobe Enhance Speech Review: Revolutionizing Audio Editing with AI

In the realm of audio editing, Adobe has emerged as a significant player with its AI-powered tool, Adobe Enhance Speech. This platform aims to revolutionize podcasting and audio enhancement by leveraging artificial intelligence to improve audio quality, reduce noise, and simplify editing tasks. As a noise reduction enthusiast, the release of Adobe Enhance Speech V2 has been highly anticipated, and early access testing reveals significant improvements over its predecessor.

What is Adobe Enhance Speech?

Adobe Enhance Speech is an AI-powered tool designed to clean up spoken audio, making it sound as if it was recorded in a professional soundproofed studio. With its latest V2 update, it has evolved into an even more powerful audio enhancement solution. The most impressive aspect is its ability to identify and remove unwanted noise while preserving the natural qualities of the voice.

Adobe Enhance Speech is built on the same cutting-edge AI technology that powers other Adobe products, such as Adobe Audition, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and After Effects.

Key Features:

  • AI-Powered Enhancement: Utilizes advanced AI algorithms to improve audio quality by tackling background noise and echo.
  • Mic Check: Identifies and resolves microphone-related issues like low audio levels or distortion.
  • Studio: A versatile web-based application for recording and editing audio with multiple tracks, music, and sound effects.
  • Transcription and Editing: Offers automatic transcription of audio recordings, simplifying the editing process.
  • Remote Recording: Enables recording podcast episodes with remote guests, even with internet connection challenges.
  • Royalty-Free Music: Provides a library of podcast-ready musical elements, including intros, outros, and background music.
Adobe Enhance Speech V2: A Comprehensive Review and Comparison

Adobe Enhance Speech V2: A Step Forward

The latest V2 version of Adobe Enhance Speech has significantly improved its AI processing capabilities. In Jason Levine’s announcement video, he pointed out that this new model is more natural and less “podcast” sounding. While the tool is still web-based and not yet integrated into Premiere Pro, the enhancements are noteworthy.

Firstly you can hear the difference between V1 and V2 on all the tests. As usual I am running the tools on higher settings than you usually would, to try to distinguish between them.

A particularly useful feature is the ability to compare the original recording with the enhanced version in real-time.

Testing and Performance

Updated tests from a previous review of iZotope RX 11 highlight the improvements in V2. In a test using a poor phone recording, Adobe Enhance Speech V2 added more bass, which was easily fixable, resulting in better overall quality. V1 had struggled quite a bit with a tough test of a recording on a busy street, even missing some of the words. V2 fares a lot better.

In another test, running the plugins on a lower setting to keep the voice less affected, Enhance V2 was able to remove more noise without significantly affecting the voice. While it still sounded a bit "podcasty," a quick highpass filter improved the tone.

I thought it would be fun before I get to my main battery of tests to try it on a personal project - restoring an old VHS of my mum on Call my Bluff from the 1970s. I have to say it did a fantastic job.

Practical Applications and Benefits

Adobe Enhance Speech offers a transformative solution for content creators, marketers, and various audiences.

  • High-Quality Audio Recording and Enhancement: Allows for high-quality podcast recording, regardless of equipment.
  • Simplified Editing Tasks: Streamlines tedious editing tasks like trimming clips, integrating music and sound effects, and adjusting audio levels.
  • Multi-Application Versatility: Can be used for voiceovers in videos or animations and to enhance the audio quality of interviews or conversations.

Content creators can significantly streamline their production process by incorporating Adobe Enhance Speech as the first step in audio post-production. The time and money you’ll save alone makes Adobe Enhance Speech worth trying.

When faced with audio issues in critical recordings such as interviews or event coverage, Adobe Enhance Speech can turn unusable content into valuable assets.

Adobe Enhance Speech vs. Adobe Audition

While Adobe Podcast AI is tailored to be user-friendly, Adobe Audition is a more sophisticated software solution, which may require a deeper understanding and familiarity with audio editing techniques. Adobe Audition is a digital audio workstation (DAW) that caters to a diverse range of professional audio creators, including musicians, producers, sound designers, and podcasters.

Additionally, Adobe Podcast AI offers a free version, while Adobe Audition requires a subscription to access its extensive capabilities.

Limitations and Considerations

It is worth noting that Adobe Podcast is still in beta, so we can expect some flaws and limitations that would exist in any new product. For example, when reducing background noise, sometimes the audio voices sound flat and less natural. And sometimes you may notice some weird distortion added to the audio that wasn’t there before.

Here are some limitations:

  • You have to do things one at a time, you have to export the audio from your video first to upload an audio file.
  • No percentage slider! It’s 100% or nothing.
  • Files with very low signal-to-noise ratio (where background noise significantly overwhelms the voice) may see less dramatic improvements.
  • Recordings made with beamforming microphones (common in newer smartphones) may see less dramatic improvements.

The premium version is more costly than its competitors, and it has limited features in the free version. You can unlock a few more features for Adobe Podcast by purchasing Adobe Express Premium, which is almost double the price of Descript and Podcastle.

Pricing and Availability

Yes, Adobe Enhance Speech is completely free to use with an Adobe account. You can enhance up to 4 hours of audio per day without any cost.

Time Savings Comparison

Is Adobe Enhance Speech Right for You?

Adobe’s Enhance Speech is a big step forward and a fantastic option for editors and post audio professionals to have. It’s still the case that you want options - sometimes I’ll run through all the tools I have and one happens to work the best.

Overall I would keep iZotope RX and its Dialogue Isolate tool if I could keep just one, but happily I don’t have to!

Adobe Enhance Speech feels like one of those game-changing tools you didn’t realize you needed until you try it - then you wonder how you ever managed without it! It’s like having a professional audio engineer who instantly understands exactly what your recording needs and delivers polished results in seconds.
