Misophonia Research Fund Grants: Advancing Research and Treatment
The Misophonia Research Fund (MRF), an initiative of the REAM Foundation, is dedicated to driving innovative and impactful misophonia research. With over $12 million already invested in research and an additional $2.5 million committed to the latest grant recipients, the MRF is making significant strides in understanding and addressing this condition.

This year marks a crucial point as projects funded through the MRF have contributed to a deeper understanding of the neurological and psychological mechanisms behind misophonia. Several studies are informing the development and standardization of new diagnostic tools and potential therapeutic approaches.
"Misophonia is a disorder that has long been misunderstood and under-researched, leaving many affected individuals without adequate answers or support," said Lauren Harte-Hargrove, Executive Director of the MRF. "Through our dedicated funding efforts, the efforts of our partners, and our alliance with those impacted by misophonia, we are now making meaningful strides toward addressing this gap."
The MRF has announced its latest cohort of eight grant recipients, joining 32 previously awarded scientific projects dedicated to building a fundamental understanding of misophonia and supporting the development of diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions. These grantees will receive a combined total of $2.5M in funding, with projects expected to span 2-3 years. Calls for the 2025 MRF funding cycle are open.
Funding Opportunities
The Misophonia Research Fund offers several grant mechanisms to support research at various levels:
- Misophonia Research Impact Award: Up to $500,000 USD for investigator research grants across 2-3 years and up to $200,000 USD for postdoctoral research grants across 2-3 years.
- Misophonia Data Discovery Award: Up to $75,000 USD for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and independent investigators across 1-2 years.
- Misophonia Research Consortium Award: Up to $1,500,000 USD for teams of two or more independent investigators engaged in team science.
In addition to its $200,000-$500,000 Misophonia Research Impact Grant mechanism, the MRF announces the launch of the $75,000 Misophonia Data Discovery Grant mechanism to support the acquisition of datasets to seed larger projects. Established investigators, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students dedicated to advancing a world where misophonia is scientifically understood and effectively treatable are encouraged to apply.
Funding Priorities
The Misophonia Research Fund has identified four broad scientific areas where they see potential for high impact advances in the science and treatment development for misophonia:
- Focus on interdisciplinary science and collaboration
- Build a fundamental understanding of misophonia
- Support the development of diagnostic tools
- Drive increased rigor in misophonia clinical studies
soQuiet Student Research Grants
In order to promote further research on misophonia and misokinesia, soQuiet is offering student research grants to graduate students worldwide. Students conducting graduate-level research on misophonia, misokinesia, or congruent sensory-based disorders at an accredited college or university who have not previously been awarded a soQuiet Student Research Grant are eligible to apply.

Applicants must be enrolled and in good standing in a graduate program [Master or Doctor] at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have had their proposals approved by a faculty advisor prior to application. The proposed research may be in any area dealing with misophonia, misokinesia, or congruent sensory-based disorders. Research into possible causes and treatments for misophonia and misokinesia are of great interest to the soQuiet Scientific Advisory Team [SAT].
PLEASE NOTE: APPLICATIONS MUST follow the word count/length guidelines below. References and Citations are not counted towards the word counts. Applications that are longer than the following guidelines will be returned:
- Dissemination grant: Not more than 1000 words. Explain goals, research approach briefly and main findings of the study. Describe dissemination path and future goals of this dissemination. Excluding References.
- Regular grant: Not more than 2000 words. Background, Significance and Aims of the study (500 words); Research Approach (1000 words); Expected Outcomes and Dissemination plan (500 words), excluding References.
- Neuroscience research grant: Not more than 3000 words.
Grant Usage and Funding Details
Grant funds are meant to advance research into misophonia, misokinesia, and related sensory disorders. Grants must be used to support expenses that are directly related to the proposed research, including participant fees, equipment and software, travel, computer time, submissions fees, etc.
Funds may not be used for tuition, capital expenses [necessary specialized equipment specific to the study might be acceptable], or personal expenses. Unexpected expenses are…expected.
The Misophonia Research Fund (MRF) is focused on advancing scientific breakthroughs and ending suffering from misophonia. MRF was launched in 2019 with an inaugural round of funding for medical research grants that seek to better understand misophonia, diagnose people who have the condition, and assess treatment strategies.
MRF is an initiative of The REAM Foundation, a private family foundation. Through a competitive grants program, MRF seeks to foster innovative science and new treatments for misophonia.
Available Awards
For 2026, the Misophonia Research Fund intends to fund:
- Up to 10 Misophonia Research Impact Awards that seek to better understand misophonia, characterize symptomatology and associated impairments, and assess interventional strategies to treat those with the disorder.
- Up to 4 Misophonia Data Discovery Awards that seek to support innovative research to acquire important initial datasets to seed larger projects.
- Up to 2 Misophonia Research Consortium Awards that bring together two or more independent investigators to pursue ambitious, multi-domain studies that cannot be achieved through individual projects alone.
2026 Request for Proposals
RFPs are now open for the Misophonia Research Impact Award (providing a maximum of $500,000 in support for independent investigators and $200,000 for postdocs), the Misophonia Data Discovery Award (providing a maximum of $75,000 for independent investigators, postdocs, and graduate-level students), and the Misophonia Research Consortium Award (providing a maximum of $1,500,000 for independent investigators dedicated to team science).
